Lot 144:
Description
An assortment of hand-carved and painted wooden waterfowl decoys representing various species including canvasbacks, redheads, and a pintail. The collection features specific maker attributions based on visible marks on the undersides. One larger decoy is signed in pencil on the base Charles Jobes. Multiple other decoys in the group are signed in pencil by Howard Jarman and dated 1993. Another decoy possesses a circular brand on the base consisting of a duck icon and the text HAND CARVED. The decoys are fashioned from solid wood with polychrome painted finishes. Artistic styles vary from textured, folk-art inspired painting on the Jobes example to smoother, contemporary finishes on the Jarman pieces. One decoy features stylized colorful accents on the wings and a high-gloss protective coat.
Condition report:
The collection is in good condition overall, showing typical signs of age and display. Visible findings include minor surface scuffs, small paint chips particularly on the tails and bills, and light surface dust. There is a small drying crack visible on the underside of the Jobes decoy. The painted surfaces remain largely intact without evidence of significant restoration or overpainting.
