Lot 236:
Description
This mid-20th century Chippendale style mahogany slant-front secretary desk features a serpentine or oxbow front. The lower section is composed of four graduated drawers, each fitted with brass batwing-style pulls and decorative escutcheons. The desk is supported by a molded base and terminates in four carved ball-and-claw feet. The slant-front lid, which features a central brass keyhole surround, is supported by two pull-out loper supports when opened. The interior reveals a fitted amphitheater arrangement including six pigeonhole compartments, four small stationary drawers, and a central cabinet door decorated with a carved sunburst or fan motif. The piece is constructed from mahogany and mahogany veneers. While visually consistent with designs produced by manufacturers such as Charak Furniture during the Colonial Revival period, no maker marks or labels are visible in the provided images.
Condition report:
The desk is in good overall condition with visible wear consistent with mid-century furniture. The slant-front lid exhibits several noticeable surface scratches and scuffs to the mahogany finish. Minor scuffing and finish wear are present on the carved ball-and-claw feet. The interior appears well-maintained and free of major damage. A small key with a red tassel is present on the writing surface.
