Lot 246:
Description
This antique Victorian-era floor safe was manufactured by The Victor Safe & Lock Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The safe features a heavy steel body finished in black paint with red-painted trim highlights surrounding the door frame. The front door is decorated with a gilded eagle decal clutching arrows and an olive branch, positioned below three stars. The unit is mounted on four integrated heavy-duty cast-iron wheels for mobility. The locking mechanism consists of a silver-tone metal combination dial with etched numbering and a T-handle. The heavy door is secured by two external hinges on the right and features a multi-stepped profile designed for fire resistance. The interior is fitted with a wooden organizational insert comprising a single small drawer with a pull knob and a secondary open compartment above it. The floor of the interior is lined with a patterned fabric remnant. An original paper label is affixed to the interior of the door, citing patents ranging from December 1885 through March 1893 and identifying the manufacturer as The Victor Safe & Lock Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.
Condition report:
The safe is in good antique condition consistent with age and use. There is visible wear and paint loss along the edges and on the red-painted trim. The eagle decal remains largely legible but shows minor craquelure and surface loss. The interior wooden components exhibit moderate wear and scuffing. The mechanical functionality of the combination lock has not been tested.
