Lot 42:
Description
This vintage black duck decoy features a body constructed from coarse-textured dark cork, a material utilized for its durability and buoyancy in the field. The decoy is fitted with a carved wooden head painted in shades of brown and cream to represent the plumage of a black duck or hen mallard, featuring a yellowish-tan bill and dark inset eyes. The flat underside is finished in reddish-brown paint and includes a central longitudinal wooden keel. A green anchor cord is attached through a bored hole at the front of the keel. The coarse cork body displays natural pitting and small surface voids throughout. No maker marks, stamps, or signatures are present.
Length: 16 inches.
Condition report:
The decoy is in original, field-used condition. The wooden head and bill show scattered paint loss and scuffing. The cork body exhibits minor erosion and crumbling along the edges, as well as general surface weathering consistent with age.
