Description
A vintage hand-carved and painted wooden hen Canvasback working duck decoy produced by R. Madison Mitchell (1901-1993) of Havre de Grace, Maryland. The item features a long, sloping black bill, a brown head with orange glass eyes, and a gray-toned body with hand-painted feathering details. The construction is solid wood with a visible seam at the neck joint. The underside is equipped with a lead strip weight and a metal ring for a tether. The base is branded twice with the stamped owner mark ROOT and includes a small circular impression to the left of the lower stamp.
Length: 14.5 inches.
Condition report:
The decoy shows wear consistent with age and field use. Notable condition issues include significant paint loss on the head and tail, a vertical crack through the tail section, and visible filler at the neck joint. The mounting hardware shows surface oxidation.
