Description
A hand-carved and painted wooden fish decoy by Oscar Peterson of Cadillac, Michigan. This walleye decoy features a dark blue-grey body with a red-painted head and yellow-and-black painted eyes. The bifurcated tail is decorated with red and yellow stripes. The underside is finished in cream-colored paint and contains a flush-mounted metal lead weight. The piece is constructed with multiple metal fins, including a signature dorsal fin featuring three circular perforations, alongside pairs of pectoral and pelvic fins. Peterson was a renowned Michigan folk artist known for his distinctive spearing decoys, and this example exhibits his characteristic form and paint patterns.

Condition report:
The decoy exhibits significant age-related wear and a distressed surface. There is extensive paint loss, flaking, and surface grime throughout. All metal components, including the fins and belly weight, show heavy oxidation and rust. Structural cracks are present in the wood, most notably along the ventral side and through the tail section.
