Description

This Native American Kachina doll is a contemporary carved wood sculpture by the artist Henry Sloan, identified as an Owl Dancer or Mongwa (Great Horned Owl). The figure is depicted in a dynamic dance pose atop a natural wood slab base with intact bark. The head is constructed with grey fur, yellow eyes, and a small black beak, adorned with a large crown of varied raptor-style and dark feathers. The wooden body is painted in a tan tone with white pigment accents on the limbs and is dressed in a textile kilt with geometric embroidery, a white shoulder sash, blue leather armbands, and brown leather moccasins. Decorative elements include a turquoise-colored and shell beaded necklace, black yarn ties, a silver-toned bead band, and a cluster of thin wooden sticks held in the left hand. The underside of the base bears the handwritten inscription Owl dancer and Henry Sloan.
