This US National Currency five-dollar banknote is a Series of 1882 Brown Back issue from The Traders National Bank of Scranton, Pennsylvania, bearing charter number 4183. The obverse features a portrait of James A. Garfield at the left and a red scalloped Treasury seal at the right. The charter number 4183 is printed in red. Printed signatures include W. S. Rosecrans as Register of the Treasury and J. N. Huston as Treasurer of the United States. The note also bears handwritten signatures for the bank cashier and president. The Treasury serial number is X856433E and the bank serial number is 15340. The reverse is printed in brown ink and features the charter number 4183 overprinted in blue-green at the center. This note corresponds to Friedberg catalog number 472.


Condition report:

The note is in heavily circulated condition, consistent with a Very Good grade. It displays multiple vertical and horizontal folds with softening of the paper. Significant overall soiling and staining are present on both the obverse and reverse. The margins show wear including small nicks, minor fraying, and rounded corners. No third-party grading or encapsulation is present.
