Description
This vintage diagnostic medical set was manufactured by the Bausch and Lomb Optical Co. in Rochester, New York. The set features the May Ophthalmoscope design, as identified by the inscriptions on the instrument head. The set includes a battery-powered handle with a black enameled finish and a knurled silver-tone end cap, an interchangeable ophthalmoscope head, and an otoscope head. Also included are four specula, comprising three black composition pieces and one silver-tone metal piece. A spare light bulb is located in a fitted compartment. The ophthalmoscope head is marked BAUSCH and LOMB OPT. CO., ROCHESTER, N.Y., U.S.A., MAY OPHTHALMOSCOPE, and PAT. 1207322. It contains a lens selection dial with a red window displaying numerical values. The handle collar is also stamped with the manufacturer name. The instruments are contained within the original rectangular hard-shell case, which has a black textured exterior and a fitted purple velvet-lined interior.
Condition report:
The set is in good vintage condition with signs of age and professional use. Minor surface wear is visible on the black enamel of the handle, and there is light oxidation on the plated metal components. The lenses within the ophthalmoscope head appear intact. The case shows external scuffing, and the interior velvet lining exhibits typical fading and minor dust. Mechanical and electrical functions are untested; the item is sold as a collectible.
