Description
A collection of two hand-carved and painted wooden folk art walking sticks or canes. The taller cane features an L-shaped handle carved into a green snake head with its mouth slightly agape, and a painted green snake body spiraling down the length of the natural-finish wooden shaft. The second, slightly shorter staff is topped with a carved and painted human head depicting a fair-haired, bearded man, and also features a green snake motif spiraling down the shaft. Both pieces are finished with protective rubber or plastic tips at the base. The wooden shafts show natural twists, common in vine-wrapped wood such as sassafras. No maker marks, signatures, or dates are visible on either item.
Taller cane: 37.5 inches
Shorter cane: 36 inches.
Condition report:
The canes exhibit minor surface wear and small paint losses consistent with hand-crafted folk art and general use. The rubber tips are intact with minor scuffing.
