Lot 155:
Description
This antique flat-top steamer trunk dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. The chest features a metal-clad body with a black finish, reinforced by horizontal and vertical hardwood slats secured with metal rivets. The corners and edges are protected by heavy-duty cast metal guards and black-painted metal binding. Hardware includes two outer flip-latches and a large central locking mechanism with a brass-toned finish. A thick leather handle remains on the left side. The interior has been relined with ephemera from the John Baer’s Sons Agricultural Almanac For the Year 1950, published in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The central lock plate features embossed lettering that is present but not legible in provided imagery.
Height: 23.5 inches.
Condition report:
Good antique condition with wear commensurate with age and travel use. There is scuffing, scratching, and loss to the black finish on the metal components. The wooden slats show age-related drying and surface wear. One leather side handle is broken. The central lock is present but lacks a key. The interior paper lining shows minor yellowing but remains well-adhered.
