Description
This vintage medical diagnostic set was manufactured by American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. (A.C.M.I.) of New York and distributed by V. Mueller & Co. The set is designed for cystoscopic examination and consists of a rigid telescope and a power supply handle. The telescope features a black flared eyepiece and a slender metal shaft. It is accompanied by a large cylindrical battery handle constructed of polished metal with a sliding switch marked ON and OFF. Components are made of chrome-plated or stainless steel with glass optical elements and rubber fittings.The interior of the fitted wooden storage case contains two primary identification plates. The first plate is inscribed American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. A.C.M.I. LAMP No 21 DESIGNERS AND SOLE PRODUCERS OF WAPPLER AND ACMI INSTRUMENTS SINCE 1900 NEW YORK, U.S.A. The second label reads V. MUELLER & CO. CHICAGO 12, ILL. ROCHESTER MINN. SURGEONS’ INSTRUMENTS HOSPITAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT. The eyepiece section of the instrument is engraved with WAPPLER above an eye-shaped logo and A.C.M.I. NEW YORK. An included translucent paper envelope is printed with WAPPLER, the eye logo, and American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. 1241 Lafayette Avenue New York. The case is constructed of hardwood with a metal piano hinge and a silver-tone front latch.
Condition report:
The set is in good vintage condition. Metal surfaces show minor oxidation, light pitting, and surface wear consistent with age. The wooden case is structurally intact with scattered scuffs, scratches, and finish wear to the exterior. The optical clarity of the telescope and the electrical functionality of the battery handle and lamp are untested.
