Lot 15:
Description
This lot features two pieces of contemporary artisan redware earthenware produced by Oxford Earthenware and decorated by artist Gale Nutt. Both items are crafted in the American folk art tradition with notched or crimped rims and slip-trailed decoration.
The first item is a circular shallow plate with a glossy dark brown glaze. It features a hand-decorated slip-trailed snowman motif wearing a black top hat and holding a broom, with accents in cream and green. The reverse is incised with the signature Nutt.
The second item is an oval tray or dish with a yellowish-tan slip glaze. The central motif depicts a bird in profile accented with dark brown, green, and blue-grey highlights, surrounded by a stylized border of vines and leaves. The underside features a circular stamp for OXFORD EARTHENWARE with a central R, a circular LEAD FREE stamp, and an incised signature G. Nutt dated 1996.
Circular plate: 7.5 inches in diameter
Oval tray: 8.75 inches by 6 inches.
Condition report:
Both pieces are in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. Minor glaze irregularities and glaze skips are present, which are characteristic of handmade redware production. There is a small area of adhesive residue on the underside of the circular plate.
