Lot 163:
Description
This American provincial chest of drawers, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, is characterized by a distinctive serpentine or wavy front across both the drawer faces and the leading edge of the top surface. The primary wood is oak, featuring prominent quartersawn grain patterns and medullary rays, finished in a medium-brown tone. The drawer configuration consists of two small drawers over two full-width graduated drawers. The piece is supported by integral bracket feet formed by the side panels and a shaped front apron. Secondary woods, visible on the back panels and internal structure, appear to be pine. Each drawer is fitted with two turned wooden knobs and a dark, diamond-shaped escutcheon. No maker marks, labels, or signatures are visible.
Height: 38.25 inches.
Condition report:
The chest is in good antique condition with a well-developed patina. The surface exhibits expected wear consistent with age and use, including scratches, scuffs, and minor indentations. The top shows slight warping and finish variation. The back panels show gaps due to natural wood shrinkage. The finish shows thinning and wear on the edges and around the hardware.
