Description

This antique Singer treadle sewing machine is housed in an ornate seven-drawer oak cabinet, dating to the late Victorian or early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1915. The cabinet is constructed of oak with a medium-to-dark finish and features a flip-top lid that opens to reveal the sewing machine head while providing an extended workspace. The cabinet design includes six side drawers, three on each side, and one shallow central apron drawer, all decorated with elaborate applied gingerbread carvings featuring circular central motifs. The sewing machine head is constructed of black-finished cast iron and is decorated with intricate gold-toned floral and scrollwork decals. The unit is supported by a heavy cast-iron treadle base featuring the Singer name on the central crossbar, a lattice-work foot pedal, and a large drive wheel. The maker’s name is clearly visible on both the horizontal arm of the machine head in gold script and on the cast-iron base. A circular brass badge is present on the front of the machine.

Condition report:

The piece is in good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The wooden cabinet shows surface scratches, minor scuffs, and a circular area of finish loss on the top lid. The ornate carvings appear to be largely intact. The black finish and gold decals on the sewing machine head show wear and thinning, particularly on the bed plate near the needle area. The cast-iron base exhibits a naturally aged patina with minor surface oxidation. Mechanical functionality has not been tested, and the leather drive belt is missing.
