Description

A pair of vintage figural ceramic advertising decanters manufactured by Royal Doulton for Sandeman Dry Sherry. Each bottle is modeled as The Don, the iconic silhouette character created in 1928, wearing a wide-brimmed Spanish hat and a Portuguese student cape. The figures are finished in a matte black glaze, with each figure holding a small yellow glazed glass. Each decanter features two closures: a dark brown composition screw-cap forming the crown of the hat and a small yellow ceramic stopper in the hand. The back of each cape retains an oval paper label for Sandeman Dry Sherry, stating a volume of 1 pint 9 fluid ounces and 19% alcohol by volume. The labels indicate the sherry was bottled by Geo. G. Sandeman, Sons and Co. Ltd, London, England, and note an appointment to His Majesty King George VI. The bases feature the green underglaze Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp. One base includes the letter A, the number 21, and an interlaced HB monogram. The second base includes the letter A and remnants of a paper inventory tag. The bottles are opaque ceramic, and the liquid fill level cannot be visually determined.

Height: 10.5 inches.

Condition report:

The decanters are in good vintage condition. One composition screw-cap lid has a visible radial crack across the top surface. The paper labels exhibit age-related yellowing, minor edge wear, and light staining. There is general surface dust and minor shelf wear to the unglazed foot rims. One base retains a partial adhesive inventory label.
