Description

This large rectangular wooden vanity or dressing case features a hand-colored intaglio print inset into the lid. The print, likely a stipple engraving, depicts an 18th-century French genre scene with four aristocratic figures socializing around a dining table. The exterior of the box is finished in black paint, while the interior base is finished in a vibrant red. The underside of the lid contains an inset mirror secured by a decorative border. The reverse of the lid is covered with black paper. The box is constructed of wood with metal hinges and a simple latch. The print exhibits fine-line work consistent with stipple engraving techniques and has been hand-colored with a palette of green, blue, and pink. No plate mark is visible as the print is flush-mounted within the lid. No maker marks or signatures are present on the box or the print.

Width: 16 inches
Depth: 12.5 inches
Height: 3.5 inches (closed).

Condition report:

The black exterior finish shows significant paint loss, chipping, and abrasions, particularly along the edges and corners. The hand-colored print exhibits overall toning, scattered foxing, and minor surface soiling. The interior mirror glass has minor age-related oxidation and desilvering spots. The black paper backing on the lid is heavily torn and partially detached.
