Description
This print depicts a speckled hen nestled on straw with a brood of approximately ten chicks. The composition is rendered in a realistic animalier style, utilizing a dark background to emphasize the textures of the feathers and the downy chicks. The work is housed in an ornate, substantial gilded wood and gesso frame featuring Rococo-style scrolled corners and centers. No signatures or inscriptions are visible on the front or reverse of the work. The back is fitted with a modern white backing board and a hanging wire.

Condition report:
The painting surface displays a prominent canvas texture and a layer of surface dirt and aged varnish. The ornate frame has significant condition issues, including a large loss of gesso ornamentation at the bottom center edge, as well as multiple smaller chips, cracks, and losses to the gilding and decorative elements along the outer edges and corners.
