Description
A small lidded basket by Alaskan Native artist Mary Okbey of Hooper Bay, Alaska. The piece is hand-woven using a traditional coiling technique with natural rye grass, which is typically lyme grass harvested in the fall and spring. The vessel features a tapered, bulbous body leading to a small, flat base and a fitted, slightly domed lid with a cylindrical knob handle. The natural blonde grass body is decorated with three diagonal, stepped bands of dark purple or charcoal-dyed material. The item is accompanied by a printed paper information slip titled Alaskan Rye Grass Baskets which includes the handwritten attribution to Mary Okbey and the location of Hooper Bay, Alaska.
