Lot 93:
Description
A pair of traditional wooden counter-height stools manufactured by Nichols & Stone Co. of Gardner, Massachusetts. The stools feature circular solid wood seats with a recessed perimeter groove, finished in a reddish-brown stain that highlights the wood grain. The bases are constructed with four turned and splayed legs secured by three levels of box stretchers, finished in a black paint or dark stain. The design reflects classic New England craftsmanship influenced by the Windsor style. The underside of each seat bears a stamped maker mark featuring a shield emblem containing the letters N and S, surrounded by the text Nichols & Stone Co. and Gardner, Mass.
Height: 24 inches
Seat Diameter: 14 inches.
Condition report:
Both stools exhibit signs of regular use consistent with age. There is significant finish wear, including nicks and paint loss, on the legs and stretchers, particularly on the rungs used as footrests. The seat surfaces show scattered scratches, scuffs, and areas of thinning finish. One stool features a cluster of deeper scratches on the seat top. The joinery remains structurally sound.
