Lot 143:
Description
A handmade Oriental area rug featuring a traditional Serapi style design. The construction consists of a hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation. The central field is a warm terracotta orange decorated with an all-over floral pattern, lacking a central medallion. The design includes stylized palmettes, geometric rosettes, and scrolling foliate motifs rendered in navy blue, sage green, cream, and tan. A wide navy blue primary border frames the field, containing large geometric floral rosettes and flanked by multiple narrow guard borders with repeating vine and floret patterns. The reverse of the rug shows a medium-density weave characteristic of hand-knotted production. The rug ends in a cotton fringe. There are no maker marks, signatures, or labels visible on the rug.
110 inches x 70 inches.
Condition report:
The rug is in good overall condition with minor wear consistent with use. Visible abrash, or natural horizontal color variation, is present throughout the terracotta field (Photo 1). The cotton fringe is intact but shows minor fraying and unevenness at both ends (Photo 2 and 5). A small area of slightly more pronounced pile wear or depression is visible in the lower central field (Photo 3). No major stains, holes, or repairs are visible in the provided images.
