Description

A collection of antique infant garments dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The set includes a long christening gown, two shorter dresses, and a long slip undergarment. Each piece is constructed from fine ivory-colored cotton lawn or batiste and features hand-detailed whitework, including pin tucks, lace trim, and eyelet embroidery or broderie anglaise.

The long christening gown positioned in the center features a bodice with horizontal pin tucks and a ruffled, lace-trimmed neckline. It has short puff sleeves finished with lace. The long skirt is decorated with multiple horizontal bands of pin tucks interspersed with diamond-patterned eyelet embroidery, ending in a scalloped lace hem.

The dress to the right of center features an embroidered yoke and lace ruffles at the shoulders. The skirt is decorated with floral eyelet embroidery and a wide lace-trimmed hem. The dress on the far right has a wide embroidered yoke with floral motifs, puff sleeves, and a skirt with vertical structural details and a deep border of eyelet embroidery ending in a scalloped edge. The undergarment on the far left is a long slip with narrow shoulder straps and a lace-trimmed hem.

No maker marks, labels, or size tags are visible on the garments.

Condition report:

The collection is in good antique condition. There is overall light yellowing and toning of the ivory fabric consistent with age and storage as seen in the overview (photo 1). The fabric and lace appear stable and structurally sound. No significant large stains, heavy foxing, or major tears are visible in the provided images (photo 2).
