Description

This lot features a matching pair of rectangular horizontal prints, executed in ink and color on silk. Both works depict traditional Chinese bird and flower (huaniao) subjects. The first painting illustrates a bird with brown plumage perched upon a branch featuring large white blossom clusters and smaller pink flowers. This painting contains five columns of Chinese calligraphy in the upper left corner, including characters appearing to read Wu Jiang Niao Bai and Xi Ji, followed by a square red artist seal mark. The second painting depicts a yellow-plumed bird on a flowering plum branch with green bamboo leaves. This work features two columns of Chinese calligraphy in the lower left corner reading Bamboo Tower Garden (Zhu Lou Yuan), followed by a square red artist seal mark. Both paintings are presented within black borders decorated with gold foliate patterns and are housed in gilt-finished wooden frames carved in a faux-bamboo style under glass.

Each frame measures approximately 9.25 inches in height and 11.25 inches in width.

Condition report:

The paintings appear to be in good condition with no visible foxing, staining, or water damage to the silk. The faux-bamboo frames show minor surface wear, light scuffs, and small areas of gilt loss consistent with age and handling. The black and gold decorative borders show some slight rubbing.
