Description

A surrealist work by the artist Laynor, likely executed in gouache or acrylic on paper. The composition presents a desert-like landscape containing several distorted, dreamlike elements. A white, wood-sided building labeled MESS HALL 5 and T-114 stands at a sharp, unnatural tilt. To the left, a large broom is suspended from a horizontal wooden beam supported by an upright post. In the foreground, a series of graduated chrome trash cans are arranged on a red wooden pallet. The middle ground features two small figures carrying a bucket between a lone trash can and the mess hall, casting elongated, dramatic shadows across the brown terrain. The sky is rendered with stylized, dark horizontal cloud formations. The work is signed LAYNOR in the lower left and lower right corners. It is housed in a grey mat and a dark mahogany-toned wood frame under glass. The verso is sealed with brown paper and bears two labels from the H.C. Mann Gallery of West Reading, Pennsylvania, including a framing guarantee dated 11/21/91.

16.25 x 20.5 inches.

Condition report:

The artwork and matting are in good condition with no evidence of foxing, staining, or moisture damage. The paper remains flat within the mount. The frame shows minor surface scuffs and nicks consistent with age and handling. The paper backing on the verso is intact, though the hanging wire has a small plastic bag of hardware attached.
