Lot 249:
Description
This late 19th-century print depicts the Mater Dolorosa, also known as the Sorrowful Mother or Our Lady of Sorrows. The Virgin Mary is shown in a three-quarter profile looking downward in a pose of mourning, featuring a single tear on her cheek. She wears a deep teal mantle with gold-striped accents over a lighter head covering, set against a dark background with a radiating halo featuring geometric patterns. The work is executed in a refined academic style with smooth, blended brushwork and a soft, luminous quality to the skin tones. The painting is housed in a large, ornate gilded wood and gesso frame in the Rococo Revival style, featuring prominent shell and foliate scrollwork. The verso shows a plain board support held in place by small nails, with no identifiable labels, stamps, or markings.
Sight: 16 x 20 inches
Frame: 26 inches (height).
Condition report:
Fine craquelure is visible throughout the darker background areas. Light surface dirt and dust accumulation are present. The gilded frame shows minor cracks and small losses to the gesso decoration, particularly along the outer edges and corner scrolls. The board support exhibits very slight bowing.
