Description
A collection of four antique leather-bound volumes, primarily nineteenth-century editions in small octavo format. The collection includes A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick (Laurence Sterne), published in Glasgow by Gray, Maver, and Company in 1803, and printed by W. Bell. The volume features an engraved frontispiece of the author by R. Scott and bears the handwritten ownership signature Archd Craigie in black ink at the top of the title page. Also present is Histoire des Variations des Églises Protestantes by Bossuet, Volume 3, published in Lyon and Paris by Perisse Frères in 1827. This volume contains several provenance marks including an oval blue ink stamp reading NOVITIATE FREDERICK with a central cross, a rectangular blue ink stamp reading ST. ANDREW-ON-HUDSON, and handwritten notations in ink reading 239, 2-8-6, and Domus 3a POUGHKEEPSIE. The third volume is The Cabinet Cyclopædia: History of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, Volume II, conducted by Reverend Dionysius Lardner and published in London by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans in 1839. The fourth volume is Old Faces in New Masks by Robert Blakey, Ph. D., published in London by W. Kent and Company in 1859. The spine of this volume is gilt-stamped CRUIKSHANK at the foot, referencing the illustrator George Cruikshank. The bindings are variously executed in full and half leather with gilt-stamped spines, raised bands, and marbled paper-covered boards or edges.
Condition report:
The leather bindings show significant age-related wear, including heavy scuffing to the surfaces, rubbing at the joints and edges, and losses to the leather at the head and tail of the spines (photo 1). The interiors exhibit varying degrees of foxing, toning, and periodic staining throughout. Specifically, the Sterne volume shows heavy toning and foxing to the frontispiece and title page, as well as a visible indentation and rust-colored staining from a metal paper clip at the top margin (photo 2). The Bossuet volume shows similar paper clip discoloration and multiple library stamps and ink notations on the title page (photo 3). The Lardner volume displays toning and a paper clip mark (photo 4). The Blakey volume shows foxing, minor marginal tears, and paper clip impressions to the preliminary leaves (photo 5).
