A collection of volumes from the Library of Valuable Knowledge series published by D. Appleton and Company. This educational series provides introductory accounts of various scientific and cultural disciplines for the general reader. L. Waterhouse, The Story of Photography by Alfred T. Story, The Story of the Art of Music by F. J. Crowest, The Story of the Mind by J. M. Baldwin, and The Story of the Plants by Grant Allen. The text blocks are finished with top edge gilding. The copyright page of the botany volume indicates publication in 1902.
Condition report:
The bindings show wear consistent with age. There is rubbing, scuffing, and minor chipping to the leather at the head and tail of several spines (photo 1). Two volumes show significant color fading and surface wear to the spine leather, appearing brown compared to the dark green or black of the other volumes in the collection (photo 1). The top edge gilding shows minor dulling and light dust spotting (photo 1). Internally, the pages exhibit uniform age-related toning (photo 2). A non-integral purple plastic-coated paperclip is attached to a flyleaf in one volume (photo 2).
