Description

This monochrome print, likely a photogravure or high-quality carbon print from the late 19th or early 20th century, depicts a young woman in Renaissance-style clothing holding a small book to her chest with a pensive, upward gaze. The composition is a well-known Victorian subject titled The Soul’s Awakening. The print is housed under glass with a light-colored textile mat and set within an ornate gilt wood or composition frame. The frame features a decorative design consisting of repeating palmette borders and a central frieze of interlaced Celtic knot motifs. There are faint markings or a signature located along the bottom edge of the print, but they are too blurry to be legible as a specific name or text.

Across the widest point of the frame: 11 3/8 inches
Across the visible width of the image: 7 1/2 inches.

Condition report:

The print itself appears to be in good condition with no visible foxing, tears, or significant fading. The textile mat shows prominent water staining and rippling, most notably along the bottom edge (photo 1). The gilt frame exhibits minor surface wear and small scattered losses to the decorative finish, particularly at the corners and along the outer edges, consistent with age and handling (photo 1).
