Description
This collection consists of 41 US Buffalo nickels, also known as Indian Head nickels, and 4 US Liberty Head nickels, commonly referred to as V nickels. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy, these five-cent pieces represent two major types of US coinage from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The Buffalo nickel group includes specimens with various levels of legibility, with one obverse clearly dated 1937. The Liberty Head nickels include a specimen dated 1903. Inscriptions visible across the collection include LIBERTY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination FIVE CENTS. The Liberty Head reverse features a large Roman numeral V within a wreath. All coins feature plain edges.
Condition report:
The coins are in circulated condition, generally ranging from about good to fine. Many specimens exhibit moderate to heavy wear, resulting in flattened or illegible dates on several of the Buffalo nickels. Surface characteristics include various states of toning and minor scratches consistent with circulation. One Liberty Head nickel shows prominent green verdigris on the obverse.
