Description
This vintage medical diagnostic set was manufactured by the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company in Rochester, New York. The set includes a May Ophthalmoscope head, an otoscope attachment, and a cylindrical battery handle. The ophthalmoscope head is constructed from black-finished metal and features a rotating lens dial with engraved text reading Bausch and Lomb Opt. Co. Rochester, N.Y., U.S.A. May Ophthalmoscope Pat. Applied For. The chrome-plated otoscope attachment includes a magnifying lens and is marked Bausch and Lomb Optical Co. Rochester, N.Y., U.S.A. Pat. Appl’d For. The handle consists of a brass body with a textured black finish and a chrome neck marked Bausch and Lomb Opt. Co. Also included are three black conical ear specula of varying sizes. The set is housed in a black textured hard-shell case with a purple velvet-lined interior. The lid of the case bears a circular green stamp with the maker’s name surrounding an inverted triangle containing U.S.A.
Condition report:
The set shows signs of professional use and age. The battery handle exhibits significant wear to the black exterior finish, with the underlying brass visible. Chrome-plated components show light surface scratching and minor oxidation. The case exterior has scuffing at the corners and edges, while the interior velvet lining shows light fraying and dust accumulation. The lenses appear intact, but optical clarity and mechanical or electrical functions have not been tested.
