Lot 93:
Description
This lot features three pieces of hand-decorated American art pottery and stoneware executed in traditional folk art styles. Included is a salt-glazed stoneware pie dish from Rowe Pottery Works, featuring a gray-buff body with a characteristic orange peel texture. The interior is decorated in cobalt blue slip with a patriotic apple motif containing stars and stripes, flanked by banners reading American Pie. The fluted rim is accented with cobalt blue finger marks. The base bears an impressed circular mark for Rowe Pottery Works, Cambridge, Wisconsin, surrounding a bee icon, and is dated 1991. Also included is a large earthenware platter with two integral twisted rope handles and a cream-colored ground. The center contains a hand-painted scene of a two-story white farmhouse with brown shutters and a white picket fence. The scene is framed by multiple concentric cobalt blue rings, including one with a stylized feathery pattern. The reverse is hand-marked in green script with the initials ah and the date 91. The third piece is a shallow round bowl with steep sides and a warm ochre-yellow glaze. The interior is hand-painted with a folk art depiction of a blue mottled bird perched upon a brown textured fruit with stylized blue and green leaves. There are no maker marks visible on the yellow bowl.
