Description

This Dr. Loring’s model ophthalmoscope was manufactured by the firm of J.H. Gemrig in Philadelphia. The instrument is constructed of blackened brass and features a detachable handle made of ebonized wood or hard rubber. The set consists of the main ophthalmoscope head with a rotating lens disk, a flip-down auxiliary lens mount, and a separate large biconvex glass condensing lens. The exterior of the case lid is embossed in gold lettering with Dr. Lorings Ophthalmoscope. A gold-printed label on the purple velvet lining of the lid reads J.H.GEMRIG / 109 STH 8TH ST / PHILADA. The rotating disk is engraved with two circular scales of numbers including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 20, 24, and 48. Faint ink handwriting is visible on the velvet lid lining, appearing to read C. L. Taylor. The components are housed in a rectangular wood case covered in dark brown leather with a push-button brass latch and a fitted purple velvet interior.


Condition report:

The blackened finish on the brass components shows light wear and thinning consistent with age and professional use. The mechanical rotating disk and the flip-down auxiliary lens mount function correctly. The optics, including the viewing lenses and the separate condensing lens, are clear with no major chips or cracks. The leather-covered case shows minor scuffing to the exterior and wear at the corners. The interior velvet lining shows light fading and minor impressions from the instrument components.
