Description
A mid-20th century medical diagnostic set manufactured by American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. (A.C.M.I.) under the Wappler brand name. The professional set includes a battery-powered handle, a May-Ophthalmoscope head, an otoscope head with a hinged magnifying lens, and six graduated chrome-plated metal ear speculums. The instruments are constructed from chrome-plated and black-finished metal, with the handle featuring a textured black grip. The set is housed in its original rectangular presentation case with a black textured faux-leather exterior and a blue velvet and satin-lined interior. The interior lid is printed with Wappler, a central circular trade mark logo, and American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. New York. The handle neck is incised with American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. N.Y. The ophthalmoscope head is marked Wappler and May-Ophthalmoscope, featuring a rotating lens disk with a numerical scale in red and white. A small paper tag in the case specifies lamp replacement for A. C. M. I. No. 34.
Condition report:
The set is in well-preserved vintage condition and appears substantially complete. Lenses in both diagnostic heads are clear and free of significant scratches. Mechanical components, including the ophthalmoscope lens disk and the otoscope hinge, operate smoothly. The chrome-plated surfaces exhibit light wear and minor tarnishing consistent with age and clinical use. The case exterior shows minor scuffing at the corners, while the interior lining remains well-preserved. Electrical functionality and lamp operation have not been tested.
