Lot 105:
Description
This lot features an antique medical diagnostic instrument identified as a hand-held ophthalmoscope. The instrument is constructed with a tapered black handle, likely made of turned wood or vulcanite, which is connected to a circular disk head via a nickel-plated metal ferrule. The disk head is finished in a dark material, such as vulcanite or painted metal, and features a small central viewing aperture. A hinged metal clip is mounted on the disk to accommodate interchangeable lenses. The set includes three circular glass lenses of varying thicknesses. The instrument and lenses are contained within a rectangular storage box made of light-colored wood, possibly pine, featuring a sliding lid and simple joinery. No maker marks, brand names, or inscriptions are present on the instrument, the lenses, or the wooden box.
Condition report:
The instrument exhibits signs of age and historical use. There is minor surface wear to the black handle and the disk head. The three glass lenses are intact and clear but show surface dust and minor grime. The hinged lens holder is functional. The wooden storage box shows significant surface staining, discoloration, and wear to the edges and the sliding lid.
