Lot 112:
Description
This set is a Liebreich’s Ophthalmoscope, an ophthalmic diagnostic tool designed by ophthalmologist Richard Liebreich. The instrument features a circular mirror with a central aperture, equipped with a small hinged magnifying lens for focus adjustment. This assembly is mounted onto a detachable handle crafted from a dark, polished material, such as ebonized wood or vulcanite, with silver-toned metal connectors. Included in the set are two large biconvex glass condensing lenses and four additional small lenses housed in specialized compartments within the lid of the case. The rectangular presentation case is covered in a dark, textured leather or leatherette and features the gold-stamped inscription LIEBREICH’S. OPHTHALMOSCOPE on the lid. The interior is lined with a padded purple velvet and contains custom-fitted recesses for the handle and lenses.
Condition report:
The set is in fair to good antique condition. Metal components show tarnish and patina consistent with age. The glass lenses appear clear with minor surface dust and light scratches. The presentation case exhibits noticeable external wear, including scuffing, edge wear, and surface loss to the leatherette. The interior velvet lining is faded and shows wear in the recessed areas. The mechanical hinge on the auxiliary lens remains functional.
