Lot 96:
Description
This rectangular metal apothecary tin was used for Seidlitz Powders, a traditional effervescent laxative and antacid. The lid features a cream-colored paper lithograph label with decorative typography in black and red ink. The label indicates the product met United States Pharmacopeia standards and was distributed by the Louis K. Liggett Company of New York, the operator of Liggetts Drug Stores. The interior contains several original paper-wrapped dose packets, including both cream-colored and blue papers. The printed directions on the lid specify dissolving the contents of a blue and a white paper separately in water before mixing and drinking the solution immediately.
Condition report:
The tin is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The paper label is intact but shows significant yellowing, foxing, and dark staining, particularly around the perimeter. The metal container exhibits surface wear, light scratches, and oxidation consistent with age. The interior bottom has more pronounced rust and pitting. The original paper-wrapped doses are present but have become brittle and discolored over time. This item is sold as a historical collectible only and is not intended for medicinal use.
