Description

A mid-20th-century professional medical diagnostic set manufactured by Welch Allyn. The set consists of a heavy, knurled chrome-plated metal battery handle and two interchangeable diagnostic heads. The ophthalmoscope head is constructed of black composition material and chrome-plated metal, featuring a rotating lens selection wheel for various magnifications. The otoscope head is chrome-plated metal with an integrated magnifying lens and a port for specula attachments. Included are three green plastic specula tips of graduated sizes. The collection is housed in its original brown mottled Bakelite hard-shell case, which features Art Deco-influenced horizontal parallel lines and a stylized interlocking WA logo on the lid. The interior is molded to accommodate each component. The metal case clasp is stamped DES. PAT. NO. 163,210. The black ophthalmoscope head is marked PAT NO. 2027558. The base of the attachments and the handle are stamped WELCH ALLYN SKAN-FALLS N.Y. A handwritten note accompanying the set indicates it originated from an OB-GYN office and dates it to the 1940s, though the design patent on the case clasp was granted in May 1951, suggesting a production date in the early to mid-1950s.

Condition report:

The set is complete with the handle, both primary diagnostic heads, and three specula. Lenses on both the ophthalmoscope and otoscope heads appear clear and free of significant scratches or clouding. The lens selection wheel on the ophthalmoscope rotates smoothly, and the heads attach securely to the handle. The chrome finish is well-preserved with minimal pitting. The battery compartment is clean and free of corrosion. The internal electrical function and bulbs have not been tested. The Bakelite case shows minor surface scuffing consistent with professional use and age.
