Description

This primitive storage trunk is constructed in the traditional six-board style from solid pine with a warm honey-toned finish. The chest features bootjack ends, where the side panels extend downward to form the legs with arched cutouts. The construction utilizes simple nailed joinery. The lift-top lid is reinforced on the underside with two wooden cleats secured with screws. Hardware includes two decorative cast iron handles on the side panels featuring a foliate pattern and two black-finished metal butt hinges on the interior. A single keyhole is located on the center of the front panel, though the internal locking mechanism is not visible and no key is present. The interior showcases natural wood grain and knotting consistent with pine construction.

Condition report:

The chest is in fair to good antique condition, exhibiting wear consistent with age and utilitarian use. The lid displays a prominent circular ring mark in the center along with various surface scratches and indentations. There is general wear to the finish throughout, particularly along the edges and at the base of the feet. The bottom edges of the side panels show minor wood loss and splintering. The interior hinges are later replacements.
