Description

This lot features a large, cylindrical stoneware crock with a 10-gallon capacity, repurposed as a stool or side table with a custom-fitted wooden seat. The crock is finished with a cream-colored exterior glaze and a dark brown slip-glazed interior. The front of the vessel displays a cobalt blue capacity mark consisting of a keystone outline with a central circle containing the number 10. This mark is associated with stoneware production from the New Brighton region of Pennsylvania. The custom seat is constructed from oak and features two semi-circular cleats on the underside, secured with screws to hold the lid securely within the rim. The underside of the wooden seat also bears wood-burned lettering that reads ROBERT E. PHILLIPS, CHARLESTOWN, MD.

Condition report:

The stoneware crock exhibits signs of age and utilitarian use. A visible hairline crack is located on the unglazed base and extends partially up the lower portion of the body. There are minor chips and typical shelf wear around the bottom rim. The exterior glaze shows light surface staining and minor pitting consistent with the manufacturing process and age. The custom wooden seat is in good structural condition with a polished finish and minor surface wear.
