Lot 127:
Description
This large redware charger is an authorized reproduction produced for the Colonial Williamsburg Restoration program. The piece is constructed from a terracotta-colored earthenware body. The interior surface is finished with a dark chocolate brown manganese-type lead glaze. It is decorated with a creamy yellow slip applied in parallel lines and combed to create a traditional 18th-century style feathered or marbled pattern. The rim features a cabled or pie-crust edge consisting of regularly spaced thumb-impressed notches. The unglazed base bears an impressed circular mark containing the words WILLIAMSBURG RESTORATION circling a stylized cipher with the numeral 4, a vertical cross, the letters C and W, two X characters, and a registered trademark symbol.
Diameter: 11.5 inches.
Condition report:
The charger is in excellent condition. The glazed interior displays a high gloss with no visible chips, cracks, or significant surface scratches. The unglazed underside shows minor surface abrasions and light scuffing consistent with shelf wear. There are a few tiny firing pinholes in the glaze, which are characteristic manufacturing artifacts for this type of earthenware.
