Lot 131:
Description
This contemporary Pennsylvania redware plate is handcrafted in the traditional sgraffito style by Breininger Pottery. The plate is constructed from red earthenware clay coated with a yellow slip ground. The central sgraffito decoration features a large crested bird with outstretched wings at the base of a flowering vine, with two smaller birds perched atop the vine facing inward. The scene is detailed with five-petaled flowers and leaf clusters, all rendered in incised brown lines. The border consists of a single incised line and a mottled sponged decoration in green and brown accents. The reverse of the plate bears several incised inscriptions: Breininger Pottery, ROBESONIA, PA., July 17, 2000, and the signature of Lester Breininger. A final inscription notes that the design was Inspired by a Medinger plate in Reading Museum collection.
Diameter: 9 inches.
Condition report:
The plate is in very good condition. There are minor, pinpoint areas of glaze loss along the rim, consistent with traditional slip-decorated redware. The reverse shows minor surface scuffing from handling. A wire wall hanger is attached to the top edge.
