Description

A double-sided oil on canvas painting attributed to Marion Winter (American, 1896-1976). The recto (front) depicts an atmospheric urban alleyway scene, likely in late autumn or winter, featuring utility poles, bare trees, and buildings rendered with loose, expressionistic brushwork. The verso (back) features a figure study of a seated female nude posed against red drapery. The canvas is mounted on its original stretcher, which bears a black ink factory stamp reading 22 WARP-PROOF-TREATED ANCO, INC. GLENDALE L.I.N.Y. Centered on the bottom stretcher bar is the word FANNY written in white chalk or crayon. The work is housed in a mid-century wooden frame with a gilt outer edge and a light-colored liner. The bottom of the outer frame bears a pencil inscription that reads Marion Winter # 8453 Baker.

Canvas Height: 27.5 inches
Frame Height: 33.5 inches.

Condition report:

The painting on the verso shows visible craquelure, particularly in the darker red drapery and flesh tones. Both sides of the canvas exhibit general surface dirt and mild discoloration. The frame shows minor nicks, surface wear, and age-related distressing to the gilt and wood.
