Lot 58:
Description
A vintage hand-carved and painted wooden fish decoy intended for use in ice spearing. The object features a carved wooden body with a notched tail. The upper half is finished in red paint decorated with a dark brown cross-hatched pattern to simulate scales, transitioning to a yellow-painted belly and throat. The eyes are rendered in black paint with a yellow outer ring. Two thin metal fins are inset into the sides of the body. A rectangular lead weight is recessed into the underside, and a small metal screw-eye is mounted on the top for line attachment. There are no visible maker marks, signatures, or patent dates.
7.5 inches in length.
Condition report:
The decoy exhibits wear consistent with age and use. There is general paint loss and surface scuffing throughout. The painted surface shows evidence of fine crazing. The metal components, including the fins and eyelet, show oxidation. The lead weight displays a darkened surface patina and oxidation. The carved form remains structurally sound.
