Description

A hand-carved wooden canvasback drake duck decoy produced by R. Madison Mitchell Jr., known as Bootie Mitchell. The piece features a polychrome painted finish including a reddish-brown head, black breast and rump, and an off-white body detailed with gray-painted wing feathers. The head is set with a red eye and joined to the body with a visible neck seam. The underside of the decoy is fitted with a central lead keel weight and a forward-positioned metal screw-eye with an attached ring. The base is incised with two stamps reading BOOT, located above and below the keel weight. This work is characteristic of the Havre de Grace carving tradition.

Length: 14.75 inches.

Condition report:

The decoy presents in good overall condition with the paint remaining largely intact. The surface shows minor scuffs and light dirt accumulation consistent with age and handling. A visible seam is present at the neck joint, though the head remains structurally secure.
