Description
This still life oil painting on board depicts a traditional arrangement of fruit and objects against a dark, monochromatic background. The composition includes bunches of green and dark purple grapes, two apples, and two pears, positioned alongside a faceted green ceramic vessel and a tall stemmed glass containing a dark liquid. The lighting is focused, casting highlights on the fruit and the glazed surface of the vessel. The work is unsigned and is presented in a heavy, ornate gilt wood and gesso frame featuring deep foliate and scroll relief patterns.
Based on the yardstick in the second photograph, the exterior width of the frame is approximately 24.5 inches. The sight width of the canvas is approximately 17 inches.
Condition report:
The painting exhibits overall fine craquelure across the surface. Several vertical white surface marks, which appear to be scratches or paint loss, are visible in the upper center of the background (photo 1). The surface shows a layer of accumulated dirt. The gilt frame has minor scattered losses to the gesso and gilding, particularly at the corners and along the outer edges (photo 1).
