Description

A large collection of vintage and antique silver-plated serving and table flatware, predominantly of English manufacture. The items are primarily silver-plated with some knives featuring carbon steel blades. A highlight of the set is a group of pieces by Cooper Brothers and Sons Ltd, including two large berry spoons and six matching smaller spoons. These spoons feature repoussé fruit and floral designs within the bowls. The reverse of the handles on these pieces is impressed with the characters EPNS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND and a mark consisting of a crown above the letters CB. The collection includes six small butter spreaders with ornate figural finials depicting various subjects including a lion, a goat, and an angel. Additional serving pieces consist of a large pierced cake server, a two-tine meat fork, a three-tine cold meat fork, and a pair of sugar tongs. The remainder of the lot comprises an assortment of table flatware, including knives, teaspoons, and dessert spoons, featuring a variety of decorative patterns such as beaded, scroll, and shell motifs.

Condition report:

The collection is in varied condition consistent with age and regular use. Significant tarnish and a dark patina are visible on most silver-plated surfaces (photo 1, 2). Surface scratches are present on the handles and bowls of the spoons and forks (photo 3). Minor wear to the silver plating is evident on the high points of the repoussé berry spoon bowls (photo 4). The carbon steel knife blades show oxidation and darkening characteristic of vintage steel (photo 1). The impressed marks on the handles of the berry spoons are clear and legible (photo 6).
