Lot 43:
Description
This is a pair of clear glass pharmacy shelf bottles of square form with rounded shoulders and original ground-glass stoppers. The jars feature inset reverse-painted glass labels with a white background and black capital lettering. The labels are framed by a border of gold and green bands with stylized decorative sprigs at the corners. One jar is labeled POT. BIGARB. and the other is labeled IRIDIS FLOR. P. The base of the IRIDIS FLOR. P. jar is embossed with a maker’s mark consisting of the letters W T & CO in an arc above the initials U S A, identifying the manufacturer as Whitall Tatum and Company. The glass stoppers are mushroom-shaped with ground surfaces to match the bottle necks.
Height: 7 3/4 inches (19.7 cm) including stoppers.
Width: 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm) square at the base.
Condition report:
The jars are in good antique condition. The POT. BIGARB. jar displays significant internal white clouding and mineral residue throughout the body (photo 1). The IRIDIS FLOR. P. jar remains clear glass (photo 1). Both glass labels are well-preserved and fully legible, with minor foxing and age-related discoloration appearing around the outer edges (photo 2). The ground-glass stoppers are present and show typical wear at the ground surfaces but remain functional (photo 4). No significant chips, cracks, or losses were observed on the glass bodies or rims.
