Description
A set of six volumes from the historical work Histoire de France depuis les temps les plus recules jusqu’en 1789 by Henri Martin. This group includes Tomes 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 13 of the Fourth Edition (Quatrième Édition) published in Paris by Furne, Libraire-Editeur in 1858. The text is printed in French by J. Claye. Each volume is bound in quarter leather with four raised bands, gilt rules, and gilt-stamped lettering on the spines. The boards and text block edges are finished with marbled paper. The title page of Tome XIII features a printer’s device with the initials CF and notes the work was awarded the Grand Prix Gobert by the Academie Française in 1856.
Condition report:
The set is incomplete, missing Tome 10 from the photographed sequence and lacking the remaining volumes of the full series (photo 1). The leather bindings show significant wear, including rubbing and scuffing to the raised bands and joints. Tome 8 has a notable area of leather loss at the base of the spine (photo 1). Internally, the pages exhibit widespread foxing and age-related toning. Large, prominent damp-stains or foxing spots are visible on the title page and facing leaf of Tome XIII (photo 2). A purple metal paperclip is attached to a page in one volume, posing a risk of rust or indentation (photo 2). The marbled paper on the boards shows edge wear and surface rubbing.
