Lot 55:
Description
This set comprises a complete three-volume edition of George Borrow’s narrative of travel and missionary work in the Iberian Peninsula. The full title as recorded on the title page is THE BIBLE IN SPAIN; OR, THE JOURNEYS, ADVENTURES, AND IMPRISONMENTS OF AN ENGLISHMAN, IN AN ATTEMPT TO CIRCULATE THE SCRIPTURES IN THE PENINSULA. The work is credited to George Borrow, author of The Gypsies of Spain, and was published in London by John Murray, Albemarle Street, in 1843. The printer is identified on the page facing the title page of Volume I as London: George Woodfall and Son, Angel Court, Skinner Street. The set is uniformly bound in professional full brown leather fine bindings. Each volume features five raised bands on the spine with gilt-ruled panels. Two dark green leather labels are inset on each spine; the upper labels read THE BIBLE IN SPAIN and the lower labels indicate the volume number as VOL. I, VOL. II, or VOL. III in gilt lettering. The covers are decorated with a single gilt-ruled border near the edges. The volumes feature gilt top edges and the text block is printed on cream paper. Internally, the volumes include a half-title page for Volume I. The set appears to be an octavo format.
Condition report:
The three-volume set is in very good condition. The full leather bindings remain intact with minor shelf wear and light rubbing at the spine ends and corner tips (photo 1 and 2). The gilt decoration and lettering on the spines and covers are well-preserved and bright. Internally, the pages show light toning and scattered foxing consistent with age, notably on the title page and the facing printer\'s page of Volume I (photo 3). A purple plastic-coated paper clip is currently attached to the top margin of the half-title page in Volume I (photo 3). The hinges and joints appear strong and the text blocks are securely bound.
