Lot 56:
Description
A trio of small-format volumes from the Library of Valuable Knowledge series, published in New York. The collection includes The Story of Animal Life by B. Lindsay, The Story of Life in the Seas by Sydney J. Hickson, and The Story of the Alphabet by Edward Clodd. Each volume is quarter-bound in dark leather with green cloth-covered boards. The spines are decorated with gilt-stamped titles, author names, the series title LIBRARY OF VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE, and five-petaled floral or cross-like decorative motifs. The title page for The Story of the Alphabet features an orange circular device depicting an anchor and coiled serpent, a quotation from the Marquis de Mirabeau, and the publication date MCMXIII. This volume is stated to contain ninety illustrations, with a frontispiece titled INDIAN PETITION TO THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS (see page 63). The interior pages are printed on toned paper.
Condition report:
The leather spines on all three volumes exhibit significant rubbing, scuffing, and surface wear (photo 1). There is notable chipping and loss of leather material at the head and tail of each spine (photo 1). Cracking is visible along the outer joints where the leather meets the cloth boards (photo 2). The green cloth boards show minor bumping to the corners and light edge wear (photo 2). Internal pages show light age-related toning throughout (photo 3). A purple metal paperclip is currently attached to the frontispiece of The Story of the Alphabet, which has the potential to cause indentations or rust staining (photo 3).
